City Recreation Specialist $18.57-$28.69 per hour, DOE
- Work hours will vary and will include some evenings, weekends, and holidays but are generally 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday

Duties:
- Under the direct supervision of the Director of Recreation Programming, acts as the Recreation Specialist for all Parks and Recreation Department programs
- Performs support work related to recreational programs, events, and activities; may provide instruction and conduct classes/activities for scheduled activities, leagues, and events; and provides support to the Recreation Coordinators
- May assist with the development, promotion, and implementation of all recreation programs. Work is reviewed through performance evaluations of accomplished goals, projects, and programs
- Provides support for recreation programs including camps, after-school programs, community recreation classes, department promotional materials, senior programs, teen programs, sports programs, special events, etc.
- Assists in planning and coordinating specialized recreational activities in such areas as Youth, Teen, Fitness/Wellness, Cultural Arts, Enrichment, Active Adults, and Sports Programs to achieve departmental and community service goals
- Assists in preparing publicity on recreational activities and programs; solicits active interest, participation, and support of neighborhood and community groups. Coordinates flyers and website and social media updates to assist with marketing and promotion of services
- Assists in planning and implementing activities, field trips, transportation, food items, guest speakers, field trips, etc. Records and maintains supply inventory and performs purchasing duties
- Collects feedback from participants, parents, and staff to improve the programs offered.
- Receives and responds to questions and concerns from patrons; identifies issues and resolves problems or refers to supervisor as appropriate
- Assist as a backup Administrative Clerk and telephone console operator, receiving and transferring incoming calls, taking telephone registration information, and providing general department information as required
- Ensures planning and alignment of activities fall within budget constraints.
- Perform other related duties as assigned or needed
Requirements:
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, and kneel for extended periods of time
- Upper body strength to lift and carry up to 50 to 70 pounds as needed
- Frequent reaching, sitting, standing, walking, talking, seeing, and hearing
- Ability to perform a wide range of physical and manual tasks in an indoor and outdoor environment under a variety of weather conditions
- Valid Drivers license with a good driving record
- Superior customer service ethic and a high expectation of quality. Articulate and energetic with excellent interpersonal skills
- Must have excellent time-management and organizational skills
- Considerable knowledge of the rules and play techniques of the activities involved in duty assignments and of the accepted standards of good sportsmanship
- Ability to provide direction to event staff and volunteers and to communicate special event logistics
- Knowledge of community resources and volunteer administration
- Knowledge of marketing and promotion techniques
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with non-profit boards, fellow employees, recreation participants, civic groups, and the public
- Ability to operate modern office equipment and computer programs. Specific skill in the use of MS Office Suite, particularly: Word, Outlook, and Excel
- May perform emergency custodial maintenance work. Set up tables, sports equipment, chairs, and bleachers for classes and programs
- May provide security for the building and grounds. In addition, makes safety checks on the facility and eliminates hazards to ensure the complete safety of the patrons
- Able to multi-task and prioritize a variety of projects concurrently, able to manage several different projects simultaneously, and able to remain flexible to changing department needs
- Knowledge of first aid principles and skills in their application
- Conflict resolution skills and problem-solving skills/techniques to resolve issues
- Proficient in both writing and editing with strong attention to detail
- Collaborative and creative thinker
Preferred Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or GED is required; some college-level coursework is desired
- Two (2) years of relevant part-time recreation program experience, or related work experience.
- Any combination of training, education, and experience would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities
- Applicants must possess a valid driver’s license and maintain a satisfactory driving record
- Obtain First Aid, AED, and CPR certification within six (6) months of employment
